Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes? Here's Why (And How We Fix It in Edmonton)

Dishes coming out cloudy, gritty, or still dirty? The problem is usually a clogged filter, blocked spray arm, or a water temperature issue — all fixable. Here's what our Edmonton technicians find most often, and what each repair costs.

Why Your Dishwasher Isn't Cleaning Properly

A dishwasher that leaves dishes cloudy, gritty, or still visibly dirty is one of the most common appliance complaints we hear from Edmonton homeowners. The problem is rarely the dishwasher itself — more often it's a combination of a clogged filter, a failing spray arm, or a water temperature issue that's easy to fix once you know where to look.

Modern dishwashers are more water-efficient than older models, which means they rely heavily on clean spray arms and a functioning filter to circulate water effectively. When either is compromised, cleaning performance drops fast — even with premium detergent.

1. Clogged or Dirty Filter

Most dishwashers built after 2010 have a manual-clean filter at the bottom of the tub — a cylindrical mesh screen that traps food particles so they don't recirculate onto your dishes. When this filter gets clogged, dirty water recirculates through the wash cycle and deposits a gritty film on everything.

Cleaning the filter is a simple DIY task: twist it out, rinse it under warm water, and use a soft brush to clear any stuck debris. It should be cleaned every 2–4 weeks if you run the dishwasher daily. If the filter is damaged or the housing is cracked, a technician can replace it for $60–$120.

2. Blocked or Worn Spray Arms

Spray arms rotate and jet water onto dishes from below and above. The small holes in the arms — called spray nozzles — can become clogged with mineral deposits, broken glass, or food debris. When enough nozzles are blocked, water pressure drops and the upper or lower rack stops getting cleaned properly.

Remove the spray arms (they usually unscrew or unclip) and hold them up to the light — blocked holes are easy to spot. Clear them with a toothpick or thin wire. If an arm is cracked, warped, or won't spin freely on its bearing, replacement arms cost $30–$80 and take about 15 minutes to install.

3. Water Temperature Too Low

Dishwashers need water at 49–60°C (120–140°F) to dissolve detergent properly and cut through grease. If your home's hot water heater is set too low, or if the dishwasher's internal heating element has failed, water enters the machine too cool to clean effectively.

Run your kitchen tap until the water is hot before starting the dishwasher — this purges cold water from the supply line and ensures the first fill is at the right temperature. If dishes are still coming out dirty after this, the dishwasher's heating element or thermistor may need replacement ($150–$280).

4. Detergent Dispenser Not Opening

The detergent dispenser has a spring-loaded door that opens at a specific point in the wash cycle. If the door latch is broken, the spring is worn, or the dispenser is blocked by a large item in the lower rack, detergent never enters the wash water — and dishes come out just as dirty as they went in.

Check that nothing in the lower rack is blocking the dispenser door from swinging open. If the door mechanism itself is faulty, a dispenser replacement costs $80–$160 including labour. This is one of the most overlooked causes of poor dishwasher cleaning performance.

5. Wash Pump or Circulation Pump Failure

The circulation pump forces water through the spray arms at high pressure. If the pump motor is failing, water pressure drops across the entire machine — dishes on both racks come out dirty, and you may hear an unusual humming or grinding noise during the wash cycle.

A failing circulation pump is a more serious repair ($200–$380) but is often worth doing on a machine that's less than 8–10 years old. Our technicians can test pump pressure during the diagnostic visit and give you an honest assessment of whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your specific model.

When to Call a Technician

Start with the basics: clean the filter, clear the spray arm nozzles, and make sure the detergent dispenser door opens freely. If cleaning performance doesn't improve after those steps, the problem is likely a mechanical or electrical fault that requires a technician to diagnose properly.
