Stove Burner Not Working? Here's Why (And How We Fix It in Edmonton)

A stove burner that won't heat — gas or electric — is one of the most common appliance calls we receive in Edmonton. Here are the six most common causes our technicians find, and what each repair costs.

Why Your Stove Burner Isn't Working

A stove burner that won't heat — whether it's a gas flame that won't light or an electric element that stays cold — is one of the most common appliance calls we receive in Edmonton. The good news is that most burner faults come down to a handful of components, and the majority are resolved on the first visit.

Gas and electric stoves fail in different ways. Gas stoves rely on igniters, burner caps, and gas valves. Electric stoves use coil or smooth-top elements, infinite switches, and control boards. Knowing which type you have helps narrow the diagnosis before a technician arrives.

1. Dirty or Misaligned Burner Cap (Gas Stoves)

On a gas stove, the burner cap sits on top of the burner head and distributes the flame evenly. If it's clogged with food debris or knocked slightly off-centre after cleaning, the burner will either fail to light, produce an uneven flame, or click repeatedly without igniting. This is the most common — and most easily fixed — gas burner fault.

Start by removing the burner cap and grate, cleaning the cap ports with a toothpick or soft brush, and reseating the cap so it sits flat and centred. If the burner still won't light after cleaning and reseating, the fault is likely the igniter or spark module — both require a technician.

2. Failed Spark Igniter (Gas Stoves)

The spark igniter is the ceramic electrode that produces the spark to light the gas. Over time, igniters crack, become coated with grease, or simply wear out. A failed igniter may click continuously without sparking, spark weakly, or not respond at all when you turn the knob.

A cracked or visibly damaged igniter must be replaced — cleaning won't restore it. Igniter replacement costs $100–$180 in Edmonton depending on the brand and whether one or all igniters need replacing (they're often wired in parallel, so a fault in one can affect others). All Maple Leaf technicians carry igniters for Whirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, and Frigidaire on their vehicles.

3. Burned-Out Coil Element (Electric Stoves)

On a coil-top electric stove, the surface element is a replaceable plug-in coil. When it burns out, you'll often see a visible break, blister, or burn mark on the coil, and the element will stay cold even at the highest setting. Occasionally the element will arc or spark before failing completely.

Coil element replacement is one of the most straightforward stove repairs we perform. The element unplugs from the receptacle block and a new one drops straight in. Parts and labour typically run $90–$160. If the receptacle block itself is damaged or burned, that adds $60–$100 to the repair — our technicians inspect both components during the diagnostic.

4. Faulty Infinite Switch (Electric Stoves)

The infinite switch is the control behind each burner knob on an electric stove. It regulates power to the element by cycling it on and off at different rates. When the switch fails, the burner may not heat at all, stay on full heat regardless of the setting, or heat only at one level.

A faulty infinite switch is a common cause of a burner that works intermittently or only on certain heat settings. Replacement costs $120–$200 including labour. Because the switch is wired directly to the element and the main power supply, this repair should always be performed by a qualified technician.

5. Cracked or Shattered Glass Cooktop (Smooth-Top Stoves)

Smooth-top electric and induction stoves use a ceramic glass surface over the heating elements. A crack or shatter — from a dropped pot, thermal shock, or a manufacturing defect — can cause one or more burner zones to stop working, or make the entire cooktop unsafe to use.

A cracked glass cooktop must be replaced, not repaired. The cost ranges from $250–$600 depending on the brand and cooktop size. Before authorising a glass replacement, our technicians will compare the repair cost against the age and value of the appliance and give you an honest recommendation.

6. Control Board Failure

Modern stoves with electronic touch controls rely on a control board to send power to each burner zone. When the board fails, one or more burners may stop responding entirely, or the display may show error codes — F1 or F3 on Whirlpool and Maytag, SE on Samsung, E1 on LG.

Control board replacement is the most expensive stove repair, typically $220–$420. As with oven board replacements, our technicians will assess whether the repair is cost-effective relative to the appliance's age before recommending it.

When to Call a Technician

Before calling, check the basics: confirm the circuit breaker hasn't tripped (electric stoves draw significant current), and for gas stoves, verify the gas supply valve behind the range is fully open. If those check out and the burner still won't work, the fault is internal and requires a technician.

Maple Leaf Appliance Repair offers same-day stove and range repair across Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Leduc, and surrounding communities. Our technicians carry the most common parts on their vehicles, and every repair is backed by our 90-day parts and labour warranty.
